Alesis JPatch Echo control settings and JPatches

Welcome to the Alesis Jpatch echo controls setting and JPatches!

This site is dedicated to a group of guitarist playing the music of Hank B. Marvin and the Shadows. The vintage echo's used in this type of music is accurate emulated through the Alesis echo with Jpatch echoes programmed with great care and precision by Jacob Heijer and Piet Verbruggen in the Netherlands.

In order to assure that the Alesis Jpatch community can use the exact settings for the available backing tracks this site offers a common understanding of the required settings. Moreover, this site allows the user community to share the information so both the availability and the quality of the settings are always kept optimal.
The Alesis Jpatch is a DSP version of the vintage tape and disc-echoes like those that were used by Hank Marvin and others in the past and developed, programmed and tested by: Jacob Heijer and Piet Verbruggen. the Netherlands

Instructions:

Pre-requisites?

The pre-requisite you need to program a Q2/Q20 is a functional MIDI interface. With this MIDI interface and a correct configured QClick program you can access your Q2/Q20 in both data directions (IN/OUT). The JPatches are stored in a zip file so the first step is to un-zip the file. Now, the resulted files are directly compatible with QClick and, pending a functional MIDI interface, can be stored
directly to the Alesis Q2/Q20.

In order to store or recall patches from your Alesis Q2 or Q20 device it is recommended to use a Roland/Edirol UM-1X or equivalent midi interface. This MIDI interface is known to be compatible with  QClick, a Win95 Quadraverb 2 shareware editor, that's required to actually load/save the patches.

This QClick program is also offering the capability to design/build your own patches. There is a direct dependancy towards the MIDI interfact and QClick as it's based on a rather old version of MIDI hence the emphasis on this, and possible other, specific MIDI gear

1. Obtain QClick from http://www.synthzone.com/midi/alesis/qv/qclick.zip

2. Obtain serial number using Google with exact this search string "qClick v1.01 : s/n:"  look for XXXXX XXXXX XXXXX XXXXX formated S/N

What is in this box?

There are 12 basic echo patches representing different vintage echo equipment or with different head selections for that particular equipment. Those prime patches are all starting with the letter P (Parent). All further derived patches are coded with the letter C (Child), those are the patches witch have different echo amplitudes and/ or repeat values..

The advised way to store the patches in the Q20 is alphabetically sorted. Example: PA00, PB00, CB01, PC00, PD00, CD01, CD02, CD03. Etc. etc.

By doing so, it is much easier to find the correct patch by turning the Value/Enter knob.

For your convinience, each patch has an added short description of the equipment it represents; witch will be visible on the display of the Alesis Q20 . E.g. PC00 VoxLT, CD03 Meazzi304, CH04 MeazzDisk.....

What box to be used?

For the Q20 it's simple., use the one that's created for the Q20. For the Q2 it's more difficult as the modulation function we've used to simulate the saturationcurve of the tape/head combination is possible also introducing not desirable effects when your Q2 is not capabable using this function. We suggest for the Q2 model to start checking-out the "right channel" package as a first try-out and when not satisfied (hum and/or distortion) try also the "no modulation" package.

How to use the Q20 Patches?

You are of course free to change any of the parameters. But the advised way to do so is as follows.

  • Echo Volume.

First look within the same echo group (e.g. PH00 - CH14) for a similar echo with the desired echo volume. If you cant find the one you want, you can change the echo volume by changing the value of the Master Effects Level. You can find the Master Effects Level on page 3 of the Mix or use the mix knob in Qclick.

  • Repeat duration.

First look within the same echo group (e.g. PH00 - CH14) for a similar echo with the desired repeat duration. If you cant find the one you want, you can change the repeat duration by changing the dB value of the "Feedback-patch-cord".This is the patch-cord witch goes from the lowpass-filter back to the flanger.

Warning!!

QClick users should be aware of the fact that Qclick does NOT retrieve the patches from the Q20 correctly. (The pach-cord from the EQ to the flanger has a local modifier, from witch the values are changed wen retrieved from the Q20) So, always use the original patch, modify it if necessary, and use qclick to store it in the Q2/Q20.
